Five hours after the sale of my house, I found myself huddled in a closet with my dog while sirens blared a warning. I was prepared. Then the tornado struck.
It’s quite common to see someone standing on the side of the road holding a sign. In this case, however, the man holding the large sign was not asking for anything. Not food. Not money. Not a job. Nothing.
Before I could hand him the $10 bill I had grabbed from my billfold, the light turned green. As the older man struggled to rise to his feet, I resisted the urge to tell him to hurry up.
